During a parade by the Ondo State Police Command in Akure, the state capital, a former banker named Uchenna Emmanuel admitted to his inadvertent use of a bank patron’s ATM card for withdrawing cash on five separate occasions.
Narrating the incident on Friday, the accused, who had served as a cashier, stated that he executed these withdrawals from the account to buy an item totaling N35,000.
He further explained that his ability to carry out this fraudulent activity sans a Personal Identification Number (PIN) was due to the compromise of the Point of Sale (POS) machine he employed. In his own words, “I unintentionally utilized the customer’s card to make purchases from a company, under the mistaken assumption that it was my own card.”
“Upon discovering the card in my possession, the manager promptly terminated my employment. When questioned about my knowledge of the customer’s PIN, I falsely claimed to have used my own. The situation was subsequently tested using other POS devices, including an attempt by a police officer with his own ATM card, which successfully completed the transaction. In total, I used the customer’s card for transactions on five occasions.”
