The Airport Police Command has intercepted a 14-year-old stowaway at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, after the minor attempted to gain unauthorized access beneath an aircraft.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the teenager was discovered on the airport tarmac on Monday, in what authorities described as a serious breach of aviation security protocols within a highly sensitive operational area.
Unauthorized Access to Restricted Area
Preliminary investigations revealed that the minor illegally entered a restricted section of the airport without authorization, violating provisions of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) byelaws.
The police noted that the actions of the teenager were consistent with a stowaway attempt, raising concerns about safety and security at the nation’s busiest airport.
Minor Taken Into Protective Custody
Following the interception, the minor was taken into protective custody in line with due process and child protection guidelines.
Authorities confirmed that:
- The minor’s parents were immediately notified
- All procedures were carried out in the presence of the parents
- The teenager was provided with care, support, and welfare considerations throughout the process
Police Reaffirm Commitment to Airport Security
The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, emphasized the importance of safeguarding aviation infrastructure, describing the airport as a critical national asset that requires strict compliance with security regulations.
She also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, especially around restricted and high-risk environments such as airports.
