Just In: Reps Reject Motion Seeking To Stop Increase In Price Of Fuel

Written by on July 19, 2023

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives declined a motion aimed at halting the rise in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and reverting to the previous rate of N537 per liter. Instead, the House opted to launch an investigation into the sudden escalation in PMS prices and its impact on transportation costs nationwide.

The decision was based on the understanding that a prior resolution had been made to probe the price hike, and consequently, implementing a suspension of the price increase would preempt the investigative committee’s work. The House is committed to conducting a thorough inquiry into the matter before taking any further action.

In a motion of urgent public importance by Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, the House asked the group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari and oil marketers to appear before an ad hoc committee to explain the increase.

The ad hoc committee is also to find ways ensuring effective distribution of palliatives to Nigerians to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.
